Over the last decade, collaborations between luxury brands and contemporary artists have gone beyond mere artistic partnerships towards a new kind of luxury branding.

PARIS – Art and fashion have always developed side by side, for fashion, like art, often gives visual expression to the cultural zeitgeist. During the 1920s, Salvador Dalí created dresses for Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiapparelli. In the 1930s, Ferragamo’s shoes commissioned designs for advertisements from Futurist painter Lucio Venna, while Gianni Versace commissioned works from artists such as Alighiero Boetti and Roy Lichtenstein for the launch of his collections. Yves Saint Laurent’s vast art collection, recently auctioned at Christie’s in Paris, testified to his great love of art and revealed the influence of a variety of artists on his own designs.

In the 1980s, relationships between luxury brands and artists were advanced when Alain Dominique Perrin created the Fondation Cartier. In the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain, a book marking the foundation’s 20th anniversary, Perrin says he makes “a connection between all the different sorts of arts, and luxury goods are a kind of art. Luxury goods are handicrafts of art, applied art.”

Luxury transport is fast becoming an expectation of guests staying in the world’s finest hotels. Most recently, Dorchester Collection’s contemporary Mayfair hotel, 45 Park Lane, joined forces with Rolls-Royce to offer guests of the Penthouse Suite a spin in the luxury car manufacturer’s newest model, the Wraith.

Though luxury hotel brands seeking to further differentiate from competitors are increasingly shifting gaze from the road to the skies. In New York, The Setai Fifth Avenue‘s Hamptons by Helicopter Package transports guests to East Hampton after a night in Manhattan, for a day of restaurants and shopping, to return to a nightcap of champagne at Bar on Fifth.

Langham Place Fifth Avenue have partnered with private aviation company Magellan Jets, to allow its weekday business travellers to stay for the weekend and choose from one of Magellan’s summertime destinations for a day trip by private jet.

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, in cooperation with HHtravel, and Private Jet Journeys, have announced the launch of the “Shangri-La Private Jet Journey” programme, providing a personalised, high-quality luxury travel experience to China’s high-end leisure travellers.

The first flight of the series is set for the Maldives during Golden Week in October 2013, with plans to introduce the program to Europe, the Americas and Australasia for travellers staying at Shangri-La’s global luxury hotels. With the increase in private aviation from China, Russia and the Middle East, one can only expect partnerships and programs of this type to continue.
