Over the last decade, collaborations between luxury brands and contemporary artists have gone beyond mere artistic partnerships towards a new kind of luxury branding.

PARIS – Art and fashion have always developed side by side, for fashion, like art, often gives visual expression to the cultural zeitgeist. During the 1920s, Salvador Dalí created dresses for Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiapparelli. In the 1930s, Ferragamo’s shoes commissioned designs for advertisements from Futurist painter Lucio Venna, while Gianni Versace commissioned works from artists such as Alighiero Boetti and Roy Lichtenstein for the launch of his collections. Yves Saint Laurent’s vast art collection, recently auctioned at Christie’s in Paris, testified to his great love of art and revealed the influence of a variety of artists on his own designs.

In the 1980s, relationships between luxury brands and artists were advanced when Alain Dominique Perrin created the Fondation Cartier. In the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain, a book marking the foundation’s 20th anniversary, Perrin says he makes “a connection between all the different sorts of arts, and luxury goods are a kind of art. Luxury goods are handicrafts of art, applied art.”

An essential round-up of must know events for luxury professionals, including the Sommet du Luxe et de la Création, Paris and CEIBS Prestige Brands Forum, Shanghai.

Celebrating the launch of our recently upgraded Events section, and to welcome our public readership to view all the happenings within our industry, we have decided to bring you LS Recommends our selection of key luxury events, formerly only available to our Members. Monthly we will present a listing of must-know conferences, trade fairs, soirées and networking opportunities for luxury executives and press, and encourage our readership to connect at these prestigious events.

This month we recommend the Sommet du Luxe et de la Création, for those wishing to discuss the newly booming luxury climate and what it means for emerging markets, as well as the recently revamped Top Marques Monaco, which has partnered with the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie in 2011 to bring you Top Watches. The CEIBS Prestige Brands Forum will focus on the increasing democracy in luxury, whilst the Moscow Golf & Luxury Property Show will service the increasing number of Russians looking to invest in overseas property.

The Sommet du Luxe et de la Création

March 21 | Paris

The Sommet du Luxe et de la Création brings together creators and entrepreneurs within the luxury sector, as well as strategists, researchers, sociologists, philosophers and journalists. Post global financial crisis, the luxury industry is encountering new highs, producing new markets and growth strategies, as a result the meeting will discuss luxury hotspots such as China, Russia and the UAE, as well as alternative destinations such as Vietnam and Brazil, and how businesses must leverage the internet to connect with these destinations. The one-day format comprises keynote speakers, themed panel discussions and a lunch within the Grand Intercontinental Hotel, Paris, where the event is held.

Speakers include Jean-Christophe Bédos, CEO, Boucheron; Maria Luisa Poumaillou, Founder, Maria Luisa; Hervé Martin, CEO, Baccarat; Augustin Depardon, Louis XIII Director, Remy Cointreau; Hervé Léger, fashion designer & president, Hervé L. Leroux, and Alain Schimel, President, Zilli.

Top Marques Monaco

April 14-17 | Monaco

Top Marques Monaco is one of the most exclusive events in the world, presenting the greatest panorama of luxury and supercars under the same roof. Held annually since April 2004, under the High Patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, the show attracts the very best luxury and super-cars, alongside private jets, luxury real estate, private banking, rare wines and unique products of excellence from the luxury industry. The 2010 event attracted over 30,000 visitors.

For the first time, Top Marques have partnered with the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, to expand Top Marques Watches to the Salon Guelfe, to accommodate the growing high calibre wrist action. Over 20 brands will showcase luxury and limited edition timepieces as well the finest collections from six of the best jewellery houses. The 2011 event will also host the launch of Top Marques Superboats, a new feature to the supercar show and first time alliance with the Ports of Monaco to showcase boats and tenders.

CEIBS Prestige Brands Forum 2011

April 16 | Shanghai

Now in it’s third year, the Prestige Brands Forum takes place at the China Europe International Business School, a not-for-profit joint venture established in 1994 with the financial and political support of the Chinese government and the European Commission. The academic event aims to examine the democratisation of luxury, brought about by globalization, wealth-creation opportunities, new market segments and digital communications, and how this is changing the landscape of the luxury universe.

The forum incorporates keynote speakers and open panel discussions over three key sessions: Classification and Business Models of Prestige Brands, Design, Production and Marketing and Prestige Seeking Consumers. Speakers include Andrew Wu, Director, LVMH Group China; Umberto Angeloni, Former Partner & CEO, Brioni Group; Cristina Ventura-Steinemann, Regional Retail Director of Asia Pacific, Prada; Francis Gouten, Former CEO of Asia Pacific, Cartier; Founder, Gouten Consulting Ltd and Mark Ritson, Associate Professor of Marketing, Melbourne Business School; Advisor & In-house Professor, LVMH.

Moscow Golf & Luxury Property Show

April 22-23 | Moscow
